D'Angelo Russell Tried To Fly With Some Weed And You'll Never Guess What Happened Next
(USA TODAY) – Brooklyn Nets All-Star point guard D’Angelo Russell was cited at a New York airport Wednesday night for marijuana possession, a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey told USA TODAY Sports.
Russell, who was flying from LaGuardia Airport to Louisville International Airport, was questioned by police after a routine search by TSA workers flagged what at first glance appeared to be a can of Arizona Iced Tea in a checked bag, a person with knowledge of the incident told USA TODAY Sports. Upon further inspection, the can had a hidden compartment where marijuana was discovered.
Russell received a summons to appear in court for marijuana possession of less than 50 grams, according to the Port Authority spokesperson. The citation Russell received is a violation under New York law and is punishable by a fine of $100 or less.
The Port Authority spokesperson, who did not provide any more details, and the person who provided the information on the specifics of the incident were granted anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the incident because it had not been made public.
Smh, did D’Angelo Russell learn nothing from Michael Vick? Part of me wants to give Russell credit, at least he thought he had come up with the perfect plan with this Arizona Ice Tea idea, and then checking the bag makes sense because I’m pretty sure TSA would make you throw that out if you brought it with you through security. So while I want to give him an A for effort, there’s only one thing holding me back. In 2019, with all the different ways to get high, I will never understand someone who tries to bring flower on a plane. Bring oils, bring edibles, there’s literally a million different ways you can pull this off and not be in this sticky situation (no pun intended but intended). Obviously this isn’t a huge deal since it wasn’t a lot of weed and comes with at most a $100 fine, but here’s the thing. Russell just had a pretty poor playoff series against the Sixers, and he’s up for max money this summer. Why even give any potential team the smallest reason to not be in the D’Angelo Russell sweepstakes come July 1? I could understand if he balled out in that first round series because talent trumps all, but the exact opposite happened. I don’t think the weed is that big a deal, but if I’m thinking of investing hundreds of millions of dollars into this player maybe you think twice about it and say it’s a maturity issue or something.
If anything I’m sure his buddies talked him into it, saying it was no big deal and there was no way anyone would check and find out. People love to say that when you talk about traveling with weed. Everyone becomes a professional drug smuggler with their own bullet proof method for getting past TSA. But if I’m a professional athlete why even risk it? Even if the penalty isn’t that big, the PR doesn’t help. Plus, are we to believe Russell has no way of getting this once he gets to Louisville? I find that hard to believe.
So Russell, next time you try this do yourself a favor and just take an edible before you take off or something. Now you’re out $100 bucks, your agent is probably yelling at you and you can’t even roll yourself a blunt with the weed you tried to bring to help de-stress. Rough couple weeks for the point guard that’s for sure.
